Local Coffee & Bakery

Independent, locally owned — no chains here.

McLain's Market — Stanley

~5 min

A beloved Kansas City bakery (baking since 1945) at 151st & Metcalf — house-roasted coffee, espresso drinks, and a case full of fresh pastries, cookies, and breakfast. Open daily 7 AM–2:30 PM, with a drive-thru.

Te Amo Cafe

~4 min

A family-owned café at Stanley Square (151st & US-69) with signature lattes, cold brews, and boba — a laid-back local spot for a morning coffee or afternoon pick-me-up.

Pizza

A Kansas City original since 1976 serving gourmet specialty pizzas — the Overland Park location is at 12627 Metcalf. Easy dine-in, carryout, or delivery.

Kansas City BBQ (a KC must — several to choose from)

Kansas City is a barbecue capital — here's what makes each spot worth a stop.

Burnt End BBQ

~10 min

The closest BBQ to the house (11831 Metcalf). Named for KC's signature delicacy — caramelized, twice-smoked brisket burnt ends — served in a modern, polished setting. Come hungry and order the burnt ends.

Q39 South

Chef-driven barbecue from an award-winning competition pitmaster (11051 Antioch). More refined than a typical joint, with craft cocktails and a full menu — the burnt ends and the pork ribs are the standouts.

Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que

~13 min

A KC legend you shouldn't miss. The original opened in a working gas station and was famously named one of Anthony Bourdain's “13 places to eat before you die.” The Z-Man — brisket, smoked provolone, and onion rings on a kaiser roll — is the sandwich people drive across the country for. Nearest locations: Leawood (11723 Roe, ~13 min) and Olathe (~15 min).

Jack Stack Barbecue

~13 min

Slap's BBQ

~25 min

Run by championship competition pitmasters in KCK's historic Strawberry Hill. Counter-service and no-frills, but many locals call it the best ribs and burnt ends in town — go early, they sell out. Worth the drive for serious BBQ fans.

Something Different (worth the trip)

Clay & Fire

~25 min

A standout wood-fired Near Eastern & Persian restaurant on Kansas City's Westside (815 W 17th St, KCMO) — farm-sourced produce, house-ground spices, and clay-oven cooking in a warm, intimate dining room. A memorable, one-of-a-kind dinner; reservations recommended.
